Burning Brighter Not Out
Research has shown that when educators suffer from stress, student academic performance decreases (Herman, 2017). This course uses research based mindfulness and yoga therapy based practices to teach educators how to reduce their own stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. While doing this, they will also learn how to connect these tools to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards so that students also benefit. This class will have asynchronous work to practice the mindfulness and yoga practices in the lessons. Participants will keep a mindfulness journal throughout the course. Completion of this course will include the development of an SEL based lesson plan. No yoga experience is required.
Participants will keep a mindfulness journal throughout the course. They will research their own causes of compassion fatigue connected to burnout, secondary trauma, and moral distress related to their work. They will reflect and summarize their findings and how it relates to what they discovered about their own burnout and what they can do for their students. Students will participate in two discussion boards. All of this will be used to help the teacher develop SEL based lesson plans or unit.

Nichole Studd
Nichole Studd shares her passion for healing, play, and yoga in many ways. She came to yoga therapy as a recovering science teacher and administrator who saw students needed more help addressing trauma and regulating their nervous systems before they could learn. Now she specializes in trauma and nervous system regulation in many populations. She works as a consultant and yoga therapist in schools, in a hospital with teens, as a yoga therapy professor, at music festival events, and sees private clients. In all of these areas, she strives to use science and play to offer hope and empowered healing. She holds an Ed.S. in science education, a MS in yoga therapy, a M.Ed. in leadership and administration, and BS in Zoology. If she could only teach one thing, it would be to keep playing curiously in life. She loves to be outside soaking in nature. She currently resides in Shelby, Ohio with her blended family of 8.
